Science 9 update Biology Unit Test

Hi Everyone,

Unit test for Biology is Wednesday October 9th. If you are away please ensure that you attempt the unit test on your first day back at school.

Topics covered are as follows. Can you:

- Explain the importance of genetic diversity (what happens if there is a lack of genetic diversity?)

EXAMPLE SHORT ANSWER QUESTION:

Using the following terms (genetic diversity and adaptations) explain: Poaching in Africa has cuased a great deal of destruction in elephant populations. There has been other consequences of poaching as well such as reduced tusk size in elephant populations. Why do you think there are less elephants being born with tusks or have a reduced size of tusk?

Example answer:

Elephants tusks are reduced in size because the enviroment of poaching for large tusks are decreasing the number of genetically diverse individuals. Poaching elephants with big tusks leaves only those with small tusks or no tusks at all to be able to pass on their genes which decreases the chance that the genes for big tusks are passed to the next generation. This problem can lead elephants decreased ability to adapt to changes in the environment due to the decrease in genetic diversity. It can also be argued that this the genetic pool of the elephants are adapting to the pressures of poaching.
